Wine recommendations!
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:42:22 PM »
Hello - my knowledge of wines in Turkey is zero as we've never visited before. Can anyone recommend some good dry whites and  a decent red - we're not wine snobs but just looking for something reasonably decent as the 'house wines' for our holiday group for the week. If there's the equivalent of a liquor store or off-licence in Kalkan where we could buy, would prefer to do that to help local business. We'll be buying quite a bit I imagine! Thank you.

Hi Xicide,

I can only comment on reds, but we like New World reds,(Chile, Argentina, Aus, NZ etc) Shiraz, Cabernet Merlot and the like. If you like that type, you'll probably enjoy "Angora" and also "Majestic"  We were wary of Turkish wine, but enjoyed both of these very much.
Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Hello,
Angora White is fine after the 1 st few bottles! The red  isn't that bad but needs to be a bit cooler that at home. Lal Rose is very good so I'm told!
Bring a few NZ Sauv. Blanc with you from Duty Free just in case!

Hi there, We only drink red wine and are really rather accomplished at it! We are definitely not wine snobs but equally we do prefer a wine that doesn't strip the lining off our mouths! We were very pleasantly surprised by Angora red so would definitely recommend that. It can be bought at all local supermarkets but do shop around, the prices vary quite a bit between shops.

Angora white and red are absolutely fine - they're not the cheapest you can buy, but very drinkable. Agree with Roxie though, the red needs to be chilled. I'm rather fond of LAL rose, it's a delightful warm weather dry wine and probably drink more of that than anything else. Have tried some local fizz - not wonderful, but not so bad that you want to spit it out either. Sorry, can't remember the name of it, it had a black label.

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

after years of drinking Angora white last year we were introduced to cankaya and enjoyed that......then again on holiday in those surroundings most things slip down a treat!

We have also changed from angora.   found kavak (white wine) very good and our friends seem to like it too  they seem to be offering it as house wine in some  restaurants and it is marginally cheaper.

Another vote for Angora red and kavak white - I'm sure they don't travel well but by the harbour in the sun they taste great.

Or you could try Lykia wines, Arykanda, a white chardonnay or Isinda a rose or the red whose name escapes me.  They are produced near Elmali and have recently won a seal of approval at an international wine challenge in Vienna.  Excellent wine at not much over the cost of Cankaya.  If you have a car why not go for a visit to taste and buy.  An alternative are the wines from Cappadocia, such as the wine produced by Turasan , better drinking than Angora. There are hundreds of wineries in Turkey producing fine wine, many using grape varieties that are thousands of years old. The main problem has been the very high duty.

Angora wines are about 8 to 10 turkish lira in supermarkets and about 22 in restaurants
