The dreaded mozzies
« on: July 04, 2010, 06:43:18 PM »
Hello everyone, we're off to Kalkan for the first time in mid August, staying in a new villa 5 mins walk from town. Can anyone advise on the mosquito population at this time of year? I have to be really careful as I get a huge allergic reaction to them.
All tips gratefully recieved!

Rachel, like you I have a horrible allergic reaction to mosquito bites. We were in Kalkan last month and I have to say its the worst I've been bitten for years - even BH, who never gets a single bite usually, was bitten. I think this year they seem worse than ever, so my advice to you is buy Off Max when you get there (in an orange can with a blue lid), don't wear perfume and use aftersun that isn't perfumed. We've relied on Boots Repel (silver container) for the last few years, but it didn't appear to work for us during late May early June. The only thing I would say is we appeared to be bitten when we were up in Kiziltas, so staying closer to town may help...but there are certain seats in Moonlight that are Mozzie City (the verandah and any near the drains..) just avoid those if you can.
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

I also get a reaction to mozzie bites. I start taking 1 a day antihistamine tablets a week before and during my holiday. It does not stop me being bitten but does reduce the reaction. I also make sure I have a tube of Stilex jel with me to rub on to any bites. I get from the pharmacy and it is absolutely brill for reducing the itch and helping the bite go quicker.

We didn't find Mozzies too much of a problem this year...But Mrs L was bitten by a spider, the bite came up in a red lump the size of a 10 p piece before turning to a bruise then eventually vanishing...these little beggars seemed to be in quite a few places during the day.....only small but they jump.....they are quite helpful in as much as they have a white mark on the back which you can use to line up your flippen floppen before sending them to spider heaven >:D
People Of Britain.. When your missus asks "Does my bum look big in this? Never say "Dunno your blocking the light."... just sayin ????

The dreaded jumping spider. Horrible little things as said black with a white stripe and can leap like a stag. Got bitten on the face with one a few years ago and made quite a mess :'(
So far  no mozzie bites :-X awash with Avon skin so soft, Sin Kov and also take antihistamines for 2 weeks before I get here and every night while here. Fingers crossed I remain bite free as get some awful allergic reactions :'(

Thanks for your tips everyone!
It looks like there could be armies of mozzies, a few jumping spiders AND stinging olive flies to contend with! Anyone managed to get back unbitten? !!!

Rachel, the olive flies should have gone by now. I tried Stilex gel this year along with HC45 to get rid of the bites once I had them. The antihistamanes are just a way of life if you are allergic to the bites :(
It won't spoil your holiday though ;D

Got home yesterday and delighted to report not one single bite from either mozzies or spiders :-)
Did the usual Skin so soft/Zin Kov combination and the little blighters gave me a body swerve!!!

Got back last weekend and not one single bite and they usually get me the first day I arrive and feed on me for the rest of the holiday!  I did notice they were spraying in the drains and manholes so maybe that's helping.  I also sprayed 'Off' with the orange top when going out in the evening as a precaution but this is the first time I haven't got bitten at all - hurray!
