Mobile Phones
« on: June 29, 2014, 03:11:03 PM »
Whats the general view on this? We are thinking of taking two old PAYG vodafone mobiles with us so we have one and our son has one just to use for texting to each other whilst there also to contact taxis etc so no calls home do that via facetime etc. So what do you all think? Is tehre a better way? Thanks for any help. :)

are you thinking of using vodaphone sims or turkish sims?

with smart phones and so much free wifi about lots of people use facebook messages,  Viber or WhatsApp etc. to keep in touch. every bar restaurant etc seems to offer free wifi.  Also if you are a uk bt account holder check out their BT SmartTalk app for calling home etc.
I have a very responsible position...

Same situation... i thought about buying a (couple of ) cheap payg phones out there - say a ten pound phone with ten pounds' credit. I would expect there to be a vendor at the airport?  Anyone add to this ...
I hope I live until I die.

Griffo63, If you and your son have smart phones if think your best option would be to use viber, what's app etc.  As has already been said just about every place in Kalkan offers free wifi.  You could buy Turkish SIM cards and insert into old PAYG mobile phones but after approx 2 weeks there will be a block on your phone as you not not allowed to use phones that have not been registered in Turkey.
Skiddy - you have no chance of buying a phone for £10 in Turkey, the most basic phone will probably set you back £50. Although if you do travel to Turkey quite a bit this may be a good option.
Smart phone definitely best option but for goodness sake remember to switch of all data roaming before you land in Turkey or you could be coming home to a very hefty bill!

I seem to recall that Vodafone have a scheme - EuroTraveller - which was extended to cover Turkey in, I think May. It lets you 'take your UK minutes, texts and data abroad now for just £2 extra a day until 31 August'

For avoidance of doubt, I don't work for (or even have shares in) Vodafone.

I don't know what happens after 31 August...

I don't know what happens after 31 August...

It's called September or, (just to show off), Eylul in Turkish.
There - over there, there are.            To - Going to
Their - belongs to them.                     Too - In addition, Also
They're - Short for they are.

Pedant! me?

If you type 'phones' into the search space at the top right of your screen, you will see all of the past topics that have covered them pretty thoroughly.
