March in Kalkan?
« on: June 12, 2009, 02:47:35 PM »

My wife and I (possibly another couple) are thinking of Kalkan for our vacation in 2010. We can only go in March and would go for a minium of 2 weeks and a maximum of 4. What kind of weather can we expect in March? Would mid-March to mid-April be better.

This would be our first trip to Turkey.

Thanks for your advice.

Hi Moka

Wheather in Kalkan in March is not so bad. It is usually sunny but cool at night. On the other side you shouldn''t be surprised if you get some rain in March but all over of that i think you wouldn''t regret to visit Kalkan on those dates. Sea water would be pretty cold in March i guess.

March weatherwise can be OK or it can be not so good , But remember the season doesn''t start until May so there is very little open in Kalkan

There are enough restaurants open to keep you occupied for 1-2 weeks - eating somewhere different each night...and although the trinket/tourist type shops are not open - it is a lovely time of year as everybody has more time for you - obviously you do take a chance with the weather and no pools will be operational and the sea will be brrrhhhh cold..!!!

it is a great time for walking and exploring the area without the heat and the tourists!

Enjoy!

Thank you very much for the replies. We visited Portugal this year for the month of March and had a great time. Everything was open and no large crowds. So, I was hoping for a similar experience.

What about tourist attractions? Will they be open and are excursions available at this time of the year?

Should I rent a car?

Thanks.

Hi Moka,
90% of the places are closed, it is still cold enough you need heating and generally March is a very wet month, saying that kalkan has a different much quieter feel to it, not many people around, Kaya and bar-b-q are popular because they have a bit of heating.

Hey

Excursions will not be available at that time of year and renting a car would also be useful to explore the surrounding area by yourself which is also fun. Hiring a car may also be necessery depending where you will accomodate. It is very early season so you can easily find a good car for 20 GBP a day and also can get a better dealing for multiple days.

We had a few bookings in the apartments for March this year and feedback was genrally favourable. Of course, you have to expect that the weather will not be blazing hot and there can be a fair bit of rain, but if you rent a car and get out and about, there should be plenty to keep you amused!

As for restaurants,  Kaya, Bar-b-q, Sofra and Aubergine are all open at that time, amongst others, so eating out is not a problem. The supermarkets are also open, for self catering.

Obviously there are few places with swimming pools in use but you probably wouldn''t want to swim anyway! Generally, the accomodation is much cheaper though to reflect all this, so you pays your money and you takes your choice. There are normally some bargains to be had.

I love Kalkan and visit many times during the year (inc March) however as a first time visitor I don''t believe you would be seeing Kalkan at its best in March.

We enjoy Kalkan off season as you seem to experience more of the real town and not the tourists impression. We visited this year in March and last year in February. Certainly not sunbathing weather but both times we were lucky enough to have sunshine and warm enough for T shirts and jeans. All the locals however were still in their winter woolies and coats!!!

I think we''ll go to Spain for March, 2010 and go to Kalkan another year when we can be more flexible on our travel dates. I don''t care about the water temps either in a pool or the sea, but I do not want to take too much of a chance on rain or cool air temps. Coming from Canada in March, the idea is to get away from bad weather.

Thanks to all, I''ll be back.

Regards
