first time tips
« on: July 15, 2014, 05:08:55 PM »
I know this is very subjective to people's opinion but any do' s and don't' s for a family of first timers in Kalkan?
Also do we use a standard European adapter for electrical devices

We were first timers last year and nothing springs to mind except currency. We toolk lira last year. This year we're taking Sterling and changing there.
You can't help but have a great time!

Tell Mrs mcrterry to leave her heels at home....even though the roads in town are not slippy anymore, there are still some areas were heels will be a hazard.
Book a boat trip, visit a beach club (Kalamar is great for older children), walk as much as you can (it helps balance out the calorie intake), watch a sunset from a rooftop restaurant (there's a plethora of them), have an ice cream from Fener, a cocktail in Botanik, people watch in Moonlight Bar, buy some Off (mosquito spray) when you get there, relax and enjoy.

Oh and please post a holiday report or two...... :-*
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

K4E I think you have covered most things, but just thought about beach shoes, as the town beach is stony Haybo, so worth getting a pair, I just have the rubber type flip flop crocs which are fine.  Also would definitely recommend a visit to Hunkar Akabasi, the Kebab Restaurant in town, love their Shish Kebab! and 10TL for a huge plate of it!

Whatever you do and wherever you go, you will have a fabulous time.

Oh I can't wait! 12 days today and we will be on our way  ;D

Jayne

Some great tips here. I took the advice of kalkan regular and got a clarity card and will take sterling. My daughter loves her ice cream so we will hunt out Fener. Looking forward to the bars and restaurants as we all love eating out. 26 days and counting. My daughter has researched and believes we can dive in Kalkan.

Yep....what they said!  you won't have to search far for Fener, it's the lighthouse cafe so easy to find and also easy to spot the queue of people waiting to buy delicious ice creams. I don't really know anything about diving but know you can do it at Kalamar beach club plus from the harbour.
Most of all.......enjoy! Oh and yes, a few reports would be good especially for those of us still in waiting!!

Fener is also known as The Lighthouse Cafe - it's down at the harbour by the beach - you can't miss it. Ice creams are heavenly and ridiculously cheap. The food in the cafe is also fabulous - any time of day. 5 more sleeps for me ...

Ditto to all the above but also DO... try the chicken liver starter at Mussakka on the harbour, it's delicious even if you're not a liver lover. DO... try sunset at Adems on the way to Kas, he will pick you up and take you home and his contact number is here on the forum if you do a search. (Or maybe some kind soul who has his number to hand can post it here for you). DO... take a trip during the day to Kas so that you can experience the amazing views and DO... stop off at Kaputas beach. DO... have a shave and a haircut while you're in Kalkan.
DON'T...expect to find low calorie tonic water. DON'T... be taken aback by the sheer warmth and genuine friendliness of the local Turkish people and DON'T... be amazed that you may catch the 'bug' that we've all caught and be prepared to  probably book again for next year !
Have a wonderful holiday!  :)

Thank you all and Lizilu I intend doing all you have suggested, and read about the gorge today so my wife will love that although it sounds you have to swim parts of the treck.
I think we may well get the bug as we are all excited already. We discovered Peurto Pollenca on Majorca several years ago and I refused to go anywhere else for years so hope Kalkan lives up.

If you liked the old town of Pollensa you will love Kalkan. Enjoy!
