A NOTTS woman has died on holiday just minutes after checking into a Turkish hotel.
Carolyn Jane Birch, 45, and her husband Martin had arrived at the Pasa Beach Hotel, in Marmaris, early on Monday morning.
Mr and Mrs Birch, of Wyvern Close, Newthorpe, were due to spend two weeks in the Mediterranean resort with another couple.
Hotel front office manager Selami Korkut said they had checked in at about 7.30am.
He said: "They checked into their room and within minutes Mr Birch phoned reception to say his wife was having an asthma attack.
"We immediately called the emergency services, who arrived within minutes, but it was too late."
Mr Korkut said before the ambulance arrived, Mr Birch had rung reception again to say his wife had died.
Emergency services took over and spent an hour trying to resuscitate Mrs Birch, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her body has been taken to the Izmir Medical Centre, a university hospital which is four hours from Marmaris, for a post-mortem. Mr Birch is believed to have gone there as well.
A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) confirmed the emergency services had been called to the hotel due to Mrs Birch suffering breathing difficulties.
He said the FCO had been in contact with Mrs Birch''s family. He said: "The consulate and embassy have been in contact with the next of kin and are providing assistance."
Police were called to investigate the death because it was sudden, but there are not believed to be suspicious circumstances.
Pasa Beach is a four-star hotel. Marmaris is an important port city and has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. It is in the Mugla Province, in southwest Turkey.
On the same day Mrs Birch died, Sarah Jones, a 32-year-old from South Wales, died in a hotel nearby. The deaths are not believed to be related.
