Olu Deniz to Kalkan
« on: May 22, 2013, 06:52:47 PM »
Hi all,

We're off to Kalkan in June for the second time.
Last visited in June 2012 and, as predicted by all the Kalkan lovers on the forum, we loved it and can't wait to return.
We have friends staying in Olu Deniz at the same time as we're in Kalkan.
Because we've spent the past twelve months 'bending their ears' as to how fantastic kalkan is, they're thinking of visiting us for a couple of days.
Could anyone offer any advice, as to the best way to do the journey ( taxi/car hire/bus) and, if possible roughly how long it would take and approx how many miles it is.

The cheapest way by far would be dolmus from Olu Deniz to Fethiye and then a bus from the bus station (otogar) to Kalkan. The bus takes around an hour and three quarters from Fethiye to Kalkan as it takes the "scenic" route. If they are coming to stay with you for a couple of days I'd recommend hiring a car as they could take a couple of the sights in either on the way there or back that perhaps they wouldn't if they were staying in Olu Deniz.
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Just looked on Holiday truths and they have a great webcam for Olu Deniz Beach. If you have never been there  you  can see what it is like . It looks like it has changed a lot since  we wer there some yars ago.

When last in kalkan we had an urge to see the blue lagoon so jumped in a taxi one morning, it cost equivelant of £60 return. We had a wonderful day in Olu Deniz but was a little disappointed that the main beach is in fact pebbles, not soft white sand like they make out on the postcards!!

I agre eentirely Tuppy.
We first went there on a Tapestry Jaunt to Olu Deniz for a Turkish bath in Belcekiz Beach hotel and thought the hotel  looked nice. We booked to gobut was disappointed when we saw the beach, we only went on it once, that was enough, the stones were so hot and to get in and out of the sea was too much for me, alright for the young athletic types, Hence never went back.

Looking at this webcam it does look like a lot has been done since we were there.. My friend is there at the moment so will  be interested to hear how it was since she last went a few years ago.

Dolmus from O.D to Fethiye Otogar. Large coaches running between Izmer and Antalya don't go round the villllages and take 1 hour. All coaches leave from Otogar.

Thanks for the helpful advice everyone. We went to Olu Deniz with our friends for two years running ( stayed in gorgeous apartments called Mozaic - highly recommend for anyone thinking of visiting). We did enjoy it, but found it to commercialised and, nothing special in the way of restaurants. Our best dining experiences were in Fethiye fish market. Kalkan is perfect for us, in every way.

We just did this last week. Tell your friends to take the Dolmus from the seafront to the Otogar in Fethye. Tell the driver they want to get out there. Fare is 5 lire each. Go to the Bati Antalya office at the bus station. Tickets to Kalkan are 13 lire each. We left Olu Deniz at around 11am and were back in Kalkan at 12.40.
