Tipping in Hotels
« on: March 26, 2010, 03:19:13 PM »
It is well known standard practice to tip @ 10% in restaurants (although look out for the increasingly common 10% service charge already added to the bill), but I am never sure how much to leave in the room for the chambermaids or in the reception tip box for the rest of the staff. Any advice?

Good question. I am not sure whether to leave a tip for the waiting staff and if so, how much. Is it in order, for me as a woman, to offer to buy a waiter a drink, like we sometimes do when we receive good service in our uk pubs, or would they refer a tip so they can share the tips between them? How do they do it in Turkey? Any advice would be appreciated - we aim to please and do the right thing :)

In Kalkan as in many other resorts, the waiters and staff in many tourist establishments do not get  a weekly or monthly wage but have to wait until the end of the season to be paid.  It is not unknown for owners not to pay a waiter at all after 6 months of very hard work, citing poor takings as the excuse, so tips are very much relied upon.

Cash is always much more welcome than the offer of buying a drink, which here is not always culturally appropriate. A tip is always welcome and equally appreciated is  a comment about the good service, food, etc.

I tip 10% as a rule in restaurants and always leave at least the equivalent of £10 to room maids. It can be a dirty job and I don't imagine they get well paid.
