Hotels at Christmas
« on: August 27, 2009, 12:58:59 PM »
Will be coming to Kalkan for Christmas and New Year  :), however our apartment pool is closed out of season.  We will have two children with us and wanted to know of any hotels that will be open and will allow us to go there for a drink and a swim.

Our pool is open all year and people do swim, but in wet suits LOL so you can do it!

Two years ago we were asked to help a British family who had arrived for Christmas/New Year with suitcases full of summer clothes. They had 3 young children without even a long sleeved t shirt between them, no winter bedding for their  (own) apartment - no shoes, just flip flops and sandals, no sweaters, fleeces or indeed anything suitable for winter.

It was hard to feel sympathy since a simple web search would have alerted them to the fact that winter here can be very cold.

Their excuse was they thought it was 'always hot in Kalkan'

We do know of people who swim in the sea here at Christmas but pools are freezing and as the outside air temperature is also quite cold, it is not a pleasant experience. Pack fleeces not swimming costumes if you are coming for Christmas.

It's not just because of the tempaerature that most hotels and apartments have their pools closed for the winter.... it's just good business sense.

The cost of maintaining a pool in good order through the relatively quiet winter months would just be prohibitive. I can't think why anyone would want to do it!

The Elixir has an indoor pool on the roof.  Not sure if they're open all year round though.

As we are available for guests to stay all year round, this year we are considering keeping the pool 'open' until after the new year holiday, and then only 'closing' it for the months of Jan. Feb. and March 2010. With a new pool cleaning system we have come across, the costs should be lower therefore making it more economical. I'll let you know if the new plan works out !!!!!!

I think, a Hamam will be the best choice in winter, like the turkish people do.
