"Safe" hire for cash and documents
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:57:06 PM »
Hi. The villa we have rented for our holiday, though gorgeous, has no safe. Last year I carried all our cash / passports and so on in my bag the whole time, not wanting to leave them in the villa. (We were warned by our rental company / tour operator to be vigilant, as there had been thefts at some holiday villas.)
I'd prefer not to cart too much cash around with me. Also, I slept with all this stuff under the mattress - guess I was spooked! :o
I have several questions - is there anywhere we can 'rent' a safe? If so, what is the likely cost? And, do we need to carry our passports with us all the time?
Any advise gratefully received ... thanks!

Safes are not safe either.  Both here and in Spanish tourist areas safes are being ripped out of the wall and carried off.  This happened here in Kalkan recently.  Best is to get cash from a bank machine as you need it, not a lot at one time.  Others might disagree but generally passports are not stolen.  The thieves want things they can quickly sell.  Money, jewelry, laptops, phones and cameras.

Hi again - ok thanks for that - there is no safe in the house anyway, so i wonder do the banks / post offices offer 'safe' hire for passports and so on?  Or perhaps one of the hotels?

Maybe you could ask at one of the hotels. They are so helpfull I'm sure they would rent one. Try one of the smaller ones say the Meldi?
