Let's Talk Kalkan!
« on: February 06, 2010, 09:38:45 AM »
Hello folks!
How are we doing in these dark days?  Time to think even more about the forthcoming trips to Kalkan. So what will be new for us this year and especially for newcomers like me? And what would I really like to do again to see me through these next 4 or 5 months?

Well, restaurants aside for the moment, I would really like to see something else of Turkey.  I loved Gombe, so what else do I do?  There was a nice little place on the way to/from Dalaman that looked worthy of a look-in - Gocek?

And I like the sound of Kas or the trip to the Greek island - Meis?  And we didn't do "the gorge". So many choices, so which one or two do we do?

It's so easy to say we will do this and that and the other, and then, when I get there and have lunch up at The Mediteran, or at Omar's,  and sleep by the pool until sunset, I want for nothing else! So let's get real!!

And one thing we never got to do in 2009 was to take our own boat out for a day. That HAS to be a must, but which one?!

Ollie, our 16 year old son will be with us - 16th July to 2nd August - so we need to make sure he can find some friends. He really enjoyed the Samira BBQ evening on a Saturady in 2009 - as we all did.

I hope we get to hear about some of your holiday experiences before we get there in July, and meanwhile, love to hear about any of your plans and dreams for your time in Kalkan 2010!

cheers

Antler

Hi Antler, it will be our first visit to Kalkan in June , staying at the Lizo. At the moment our plans are ,a trip on the dolomus to Kas, a boat trip, and a day at Patara and Kapatus beach. This may change as usually when we are in Turkey we get into that 'chilled out mode', and get settled by the pool and get very lazy and don't want to move too far!!! Food wise we are planning on eating in the hotel quite a few nights as they say the food is very good plus we've got Mussaka and Bahrat on the list as definite places we want to try.
Can't wait!!!! It's nice to dream, especially on a damp, foggy day like today!!
Nicky.

Olly would really enjoy the jeep safari.  My teenagers and their Friends went for a day and had a fab time.  Booked through Adda ,who have large very comfy jeeps.  About 8 people in total in each jeep.  They said the food was very good also with a great choice.  Picked up at the villa about 8am and back home from 7.30ish - so a full day, I think the cost was approx 20-25 pounds each.  Did I read somewhere else Olly is bringing a friend?  Great if so but if not I think he'll meet lots of young ones on the safari.  If you and the Mrs aren't going just check with Adda and they will give you a day that they have plenty of young people booked.  He would also love the gorge, great day out for all the family and he as lo could go 'tubing' down the Xanthos river.  A day at Patara, visiting the beautiful beach, walking around the ruins and lunch in the village of Patara itself.  We particularly enjoy the food at Aspendos, authentic Turkish food and hospitality.  A day in Kas is worth it for the drive along the coast road alone - stunning scenery.  As you say so much to do and so little time to do it!  Enjoy!

The Jeep Safari sounds a really good idea, and a nice full day. It it would be good if Olly can meet some his own age doing that, too. His mate is on & off about the trip and trying to get any sense is like giving blood - you know how it is at that age!

We met quite a few people his age in the Samira last year, on the Turkish BBQ evening - that I must admit was extremely good, and I don't normally enjoy those big doos.

The thought of being up in the mountains with the eagles sounds quite something else, so already, after only 15 hours of posting, I'm dreaming of these new things.

Nicky - you may have seen my posts about favourite restaurants and Mussaka was well up there - along with Adam's on the road to KAS. And KAYA......and....!
At Mussaka we really loved the Seafood Paella and Olly got stuck into "Surf 'n Turf" on more than one occasion. You are in for a treat!

Happy times ahead, eh?

cheers

Antler, if you're thinking of doing a boat trip, I can thoroughly recommend Yildiz 1. It can accomodate up to 6 people, but we hired it for just the four of us last year. Costs about £100 for the full day which includes a freshly prepared lunch plus afternoon tea with gorgeous homemade cake. Adem is a fantastic captain and we have never failed to have a brilliant day out on Yildiz.
The Gorge is a "must-do" - if only to laugh at each other on the ridiculous plastic shoes  ;D  ;D

Have to agree, the Gorge is worth doing if you haven't done it yet. It's a fabulous sight and like Kalkan4eva says it's also a laugh. We did whilst on a jeep safari from Calis and lunch at the gorge is included in the trip. Just be careful with your cameras etc, as it is very rocky under foot and the current can be strong, whilst we were there one guys camcorder met a watery death. There are young Turkish guys there who will help you across but they will want tipping for this!!
The boatrip sounds really good Kalkan4eva, i'd also read on Tripadvisor about one called Yildiz 2, which takes just 12 people. Are these boats owned by one company/family?

Yes Nicky, it is a family run business.
Osman is captain of Yildiz 2. Because we were bringing our daughters in July last year we booked in advance using their website www.yildizboat.com - didn't want our girls to be dissapointed if it was booked up when we got there :)

Kaya Koy, the abandoned Greek village near Olu Deniz is worth a visit. It's very atmospheric and there are quadbikes in the area for your son.

Of the standard day trips, it has to be a toss up between Sakklikent gorge followed by lunch at Yakapark trout restaurant with the afternoon at Tlos castle or the ruins at Myra followed by lunch on a boat to the sunken city of Kekova then a swim and laze on board - look out for the ice cream sellers boat!

Hi Antler
There will be a group of us at the Samira from 13th July onwards for 2 weeks. Teenagers ranging from 16 -18 so he should meet some like minded kids. Come on up and find us and we could have a drink and introduce the kids. My husband and I will be the ones holding down the sunbeds so they don't blow away in the strong winds that we're bound to get in July.
We've done various trips, this will be our 5th summer having said we would never go back to the same place twice.
The boat trip we did last year was great as we hired the whole boat with a group of 6 adults and 6 kids. We also did the sea kayaking over the sunken city at Kekova. This was a good day apart from the fact that the sea kayak my OH and I were piloting kept going left!!
We have done Sakklikent Gorge and Patara but we hired our own jeep which was a bit more flexible. My hubby and kids 16 and 18 also scuba dive so a try dive is something he could have a go at.
Hope to catch up with you in July.
Helen

Hello all,
Thanks for your really encouraging feedback and some great ideas! I reckon I have enough to keep us going for the 18 days! Will definitely be in touch Helen, nearer the time. We are staying close to the taxi rank, so pretty close to Samira, I think? Not that any of it is really THAT far away!

I might book a boat before we go so we will definitely do it. But, Mrs A is not too keen on "choppy" so how bad are these July winds?!

cheers

No wind at all that we've ever encountered. It's just my husbands excuse for lying on his sunbed all day doing nothing. We also play cloud spotting but soon get bored with that!!!
