mid-range daily budget?
« on: March 09, 2009, 10:34:57 PM »
How much should I budget for one week in April? Max 5/6 small beers per day and light lunch / evening meal. Couple of litres of water daily. Dolmus / local taxi rides. 3 or 4 hammams if I can find them. Modest spending at the market (i.e. a silver ring and some beads). Plus a bit extra for a special trip or something. Would £250 do it?  ???

I reckon £60 per day would be a better budget. I base this on what I spend on average during a week when I''m there and that''s not eating out every night but having lunch most days. Hope this helps.
Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else.

My friend and I went on a budget a couple of years ago and managed it on £250 for a week, but that was without trips and hammams.  Alot will depend on the exchange rate, but if you want lunch dinner drinks and trips you may need to up your budget a bit.

Yes - I agree - £250 for the week seems a little low..Kalkan maybe pricier than some other places in turkey - but still incredibly good value by UK standards and DEFINITELY worth it..!!!

Enjoy - sorry - I will miss you as I leave on 15th april... :(

£60 a day per person seems really high - nearly £1700 in spending money for 2 weeks for 2 people plus the cost of a car or transfers - we wouldn''t be going 3 times a year if we spent this much each time. We must be cheapskates but we don''t spend anything like this amount. We eat dinner out every night and sometimes lunch and use the full range of cheap, medium and expensive restaurants. We like a drink but do have drinks on the terrace before and after we''ve been out (as I drink wine and my dad likes a late night scotch or 2!) to reduce some of the alcohol costs. We manage on £60 for 2 of us, without feeling deprived.

I agree that £60 per person per day seems high.

We self cater, eat breakfast at home, lunch out if needed. We have pre and post-dinner drinks in various bars, dinner out, some low cost, some more expensive. We also use the beach clubs where there is a cost involved. We don''t generally use taxis and do have a couple of trips out. On that basis our approx spend for two weeks in Kalkan is between £1100 -£1200 for the two of us.

Hope this helps

Hi jofoss
Your daily budget is about £42.50 per head. Me and Mrs Brooksie budget a £100 per day. So about the same as you. If you add a couple of Turkish baths, taxis and a few trips (none of which we do) you would get to £60 per day without too much trouble. ;D

I agree, with four of us (three adults one child) I plan on £170 per day, that includes eating out every night but not any trips. We usually come in just under and really push the boat out for the last few days.....budget can go out the window if OH gets in to any of the jewellers !!!!

Hi Brooksie,

Yes you are quite right, the cost of trips and taxis can soon push that budget up. We generally take no more than two trips in a fortnight, if we can drag ourselves away from the poolside or beachclub  ;D,  and have avoided taxi fares in the past couple of years by staying in the village.

We budget for £1,000 for 2 weeks in July and that includes flights, accommodation and transfer.  We go to a beach club every day and have lunch there (no alcohol though) and eat out every night, alternating between budget, medium and expensive restaurants.  Evening drinks tend to be restricted to pre-dinner and then two or three afterwards.  This excludes boat trips or any other extras.  We certainly don''t feel hard done by or that we are particularly watching the liras.

That''s £1K each, honest!  I allow £500 spending money for two weeks and never go hungry or thirsty!

This has been really helpful - thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone ;D
As Oldie Boy said to me - just one week for a frazzled Oldie Girl - best do as little as possible and chill  8)
And apparently I have a jacuzzi in my room so I guess I won''t even need hammams if I take a loofah!
Oldie Girl''s Credit Crunch Budget projection:
£60 in case I want to go bit mad but £40 for the per deum. And see if I don''t bring home the change!

Looking forward to meeting you KC  ;D Sorry to miss you Felicity - hope our timing coincides in the future  ::)
